Pickleball Smash Shot – How to hit an Overhead Smash

AI image of a pickleball player hitting a smash shot

A smash shot in pickleball is a powerful, overhead shot intended to end the point by hitting the ball forcefully downward into the opponent’s court. It is typically used when the ball is hit high and gives the player an opportunity to attack.

Preferred Grip

Continental Grip.  Paddle is in neutral position.  Easier to position for shot.

Purpose

  • Use the smash to win the point by making it difficult for the opponent to return the ball.
  • Apply pressure on the opponent by forcing them to react quickly to a fast, powerful shot.

Execution

  • Position yourself under the ball with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Turn your body sideways with your non-dominant shoulder facing the net.
  • Hold the paddle up and behind your head, similar to a tennis serve or volleyball spike stance.
  • Keep your eyes on the ball as it approaches. Move your feet to ensure you are in the correct position to make contact at the highest point possible.
  • Take a backswing by bringing your paddle back and upward. Your paddle should be behind your head with your elbow bent.
  • Contact the ball at the highest point you can reach, in front of your body. The paddle should be angled slightly downward.
  • Use a powerful, downward motion to hit the ball. Engage your shoulders, arm, and wrist to generate speed and force.
  • Follow through with your swing, extending your paddle downward and across your body. Your paddle should finish low, near your opposite hip.

Key Points to Remember

  • Focus on generating power through your whole body, not just your arm. Use your legs, core, and shoulders to maximize the force.
  • Aim for specific spots on the opponent’s court, such as the baseline or near their feet, to make it harder for them to return.
  • Make sure to hit the ball at the peak of its arc for maximum effectiveness.
