A dink shot in pickleball is a soft, controlled shot that lands just over the net in the opponent’s non-volley zone (also known as the kitchen). Dink shots are used when positioned at the kitchen line and are intended to place the ball in front of your opponent in the kitchen area and out of their reach so they must let it bounce. This takes away their ability to volley it back at you for a winning shot. Mastery of dinking is critical for advancement in pickleball.
Preferred Grip
Continental Grip. Paddle is in neutral position. Easier to position for shot.
Purpose
- Slow down the game and take control of the rally.
- Make it difficult for your opponent to hit aggressive shots.
- Create opportunities for attacking shots by drawing your opponent out of position.
Execution
- Use a relaxed grip for better touch and control.
- Stand close to the non-volley line with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. Maintain a low, balanced stance.
- Keep your paddle face slightly open (tilted upward) and hold it in front of you at waist level.
- Take a minimal backswing to keep the shot controlled and soft.
- Contact the ball in front of your body, keeping the paddle face open.
- Use a gentle, lifting motion to push the ball over the net. The motion should be smooth and controlled, focusing on placement rather than power.
- Follow through slightly upward, finishing with the paddle at about the height of the net.
Key Points to Remember
- The dink shot requires a delicate touch to ensure the ball lands softly in the non-volley zone.
- Aim to place the ball just over the net, forcing your opponent to reach and hit an upward shot.
- Focus on consistent execution rather than trying to win the point outright with each shot.
